Connell Guides Revision Bootcamp: How to Get an A*

We’ve had wonderful feedback about the first Connell Guides “boot camp” a couple of weeks ago, and I’m not surprised. It was a hugely successful and enjoyable day, attended by more than 40 students and featuring sparkling lectures by Professor John Mullan and Jonny Patrick.

John Mullan gave us some fascinating insights into Shakespeare (as well as some very sensible practical advice, such as to pay no attention to critics who write badly). Jonny Patrick talked first about the novel, and then, as an experienced examiner, addressed the vital question of how to write an essay, debunking some hoary old myths and passing on plenty of invaluable practical tips. We had excellent tutors, too, who gave fascinating talks on literary theory (this time covering Marxism and psycho-analytic criticism), and presided over smaller seminars in both the morning and afternoon sessions.

Aneesa Raqeeb, a student at Luton Sixth Form College, wrote to us afterwards: “The revision boot camp was very insightful and a great experience. The lectures were absolutely brilliant – they were interactive and helpful. I can definitely say the boot camp has increased my confidence going into the exam.”

Tessa Carr said she event gave her a “new perspective” on her set texts. She “found the group discussions particularly valuable”, she said. “Even just sitting and talking to someone from a different school allowed me to explore exciting ideas which I hadn't thought about before.”

“The girls were very impressed with the revision day,” wrote one A level mother. “They were literally ‘buzzing’ when they arrived home and it has certainly opened their eyes & minds. A big thank you from me for making them feel so welcome & putting them at ease & may I wish you all the best for your future revision days.”

Our aim now is to build on the success of this first Bootcamp and slot a number into the diary for the next school year. So if you’d like to register interest at this point, please complete the short form in the link below and we will be in touch when we have more details.
