We all know Stalin, or at least we think we do. The Georgian student priest who grew up to be one of the 20th century’s most notorious mass-murderers is the subject of countless books and documentaries. But despite the horrors for which he was responsible, Stalin himself remains, to borrow Churchill’s phrase, a “riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma”. This is partly to do with the enormity of his crimes, but it is also to do with the nature of the man himself. For it is both wrong and dangerous to dismiss Stalin as a fiend: the significance of his actions lies not so much in his monstrosity, as in his humanity.
